When people think of Europe, France often comes to mind first. But a complete journey shouldn't stop at Paris. These ten days take you through four very different destinations — the romance of Paris, the Swiss Alps, the art of Italy and the spiritual life of the Vatican.
France — Paris
Three days in Paris are enough to feel the city rather than just tick off sights. The Eiffel Tower — built in 1889 for the World's Fair — is now the city's best-loved icon. The Louvre holds over 35,000 works; it's best to choose in advance what to see, from the Mona Lisa to the Egyptian and Greek collections. In the afternoon you can stroll Montmartre — where Picasso and Van Gogh once lived — and visit the Sacré-Cœur, then take a boat on the Seine as the city lights come on. If time allows, visit the Palace of Versailles with its famous Hall of Mirrors.
Switzerland
The TGV Lyria takes you from France into Switzerland. The lakeside city of Lucerne, with its 14th-century wooden Kapellbrücke bridge, is a beautiful and peaceful stop; the Interlaken region between two lakes is also ideal. The highlight is reaching the "Top of Europe" at Jungfraujoch by cog railway, or the snow-capped Titlis by 360-degree rotating cable car.
Italy
Heading south, the Italian sun greets you. Milan has the Duomo and the Galleria shopping arcade; Venice has gondolas gliding under the Bridge of Sighs. Then comes Florence — the cradle of the Renaissance, with the statue of David and the Ponte Vecchio — and ancient Rome, home to the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain.
Vatican City
In the heart of Rome lies the Vatican — the world's smallest independent state. You visit St. Peter's Square, the Vatican Museums, and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's celebrated frescoes.
