If you've been to Europe and grown used to its busy avenues, this journey across southwest France to the Mediterranean coast of Spain offers a slower, more authentic pace.
The nine-day route through France, Andorra and Spain is one for those who appreciate the finer things: the vineyards, a tasting of Cognac in a stone cellar, the homeland of the Musketeers, the tiny principality high in the Pyrenees, and the energy of flamenco in Barcelona.
France — wine country and the Loire
Met at the Paris airport, the group heads straight south to discover the French countryside.
Tours & Villandry: The first stop is the city of Tours and one of the world's finest château gardens, Villandry, where the hedges are clipped into vast geometric patterns.
Cognac & Saint-Émilion: In the Cognac region, you visit the famous Hennessy distillery, then the old village of Saint-Émilion (a UNESCO site), tasting smooth red wine among the vineyards.
The Musketeers & Toulouse: The journey continues to the Gers region to visit the D'Artagnan museum — the model for the hero of The Three Musketeers — and to taste foie gras at a local farm. Then comes Toulouse, the pink-brick city and home of Airbus, where you can visit the aircraft headquarters.
The Principality of Andorra
From Toulouse, the group climbs into the Pyrenees and across the border into Andorra. This small mountain country is a fine place to pause, with its clear air and duty-free shopping.
Spain — Barcelona and Gaudí
Down from the Pyrenees, you enter Spain, with Barcelona as the highlight.
Gaudí & the city's spirit: Barcelona is unlike any other European city, shaped by the architect Antoni Gaudí. The Sagrada Família rises like a work of stone and stained glass, still under construction after more than a century.
Flamenco: Spain wouldn't be Spain without flamenco. In the evening over dinner in Barcelona, the guitar and the dancers' footwork make for a lively, memorable night.

Best time to travel
The vineyards are at their best in early summer (May, June) or the harvest season (September, October), when the weather is mild and the countryside is at its most beautiful.
